S&T Slovenija to implement a data backup solution at Mobitel

Ljubljana, 17.1.2008 - S&T Slovenija and Mobitel d.d. signed an agreement to upgrade Mobitel's backup system. The mobile operator will implement a single centralized company-wide backup system that will allow simple, centralized management and the definition of unified security policies. The solution, based on EMC Networker software and Sun hardware, will be closely integrated with the existing server infrastructure and backup data processing methods.
After Mobitel’s reorganization in 2006, there was a growing need to extend the company’s backup capabilities, which meant that the tape library and the existing software had to be upgraded. At the moment, Mobitel doesn’t have a centralized backup solution and uses different software and technologies. Several administrators are needed to manage these solutions, making it impossible to establish centralized management or implement a unified backup policy.

S&T Slovenija’s solution includes the implementation of a unified backup solution with the appropriate libraries, which will transparently integrate with Mobitel’s LAN/SAN server infrastructure and the existing backup processing methods. S&T Slovenija will use Networker software by EMC, a leading supplier of high performance storage systems. Mobitel is already using EMC’s EDM solution for its most important portion of security backup needs, so the migration to the new solution will be simple.

“EMC Networker is globally recognized as one of the leading backup solutions. For Mobitel, it is the best option with regards to cost as well as technology requirements,” explained Boštjan Robežnik, IT Manager, Mobitel. “Another factor that influenced our decision was that this solution is used by large telecommunication companies throughout Europe and the United States of America.”

As part of its comprehensive solution, S&T Slovenija will provide Sun hardware – two Sun StorageTek SL1400 tape libraries and a SunFire V890 server – and perform the upgrade of the EMC CX600 disk array. The company will also provide regular maintenance services and user training after the project is completed.
